The term Oriental rugs has recently come to mean almost any hand-woven carpet. The work can be from Iran, India, or Turkmenistan and more.
Hand woven means hand knotted onto the warp. The warp is made up from the vertical strands of the rug, which eventually becomes the fringe.
The weaver ties each knot by hand to the warp and then another strand “the weft” is fed through the warp between the rows of the hand made knots. This makes what we refer to as the pile of the rug. Each row is then tightened by beating a heavy comb on top of each row of knots.
At Sharafi & Co we specialise in quality hand knotted rugs no matter what country they are from, though the majority we deal in are Persian Antique oriental carpets.
With Antique rugs and vintage oriental carpets we only care about the condition and quality of the work. Whether it is a rug that will stand the test of time, is a thing of beauty, and has been crafted in a way that adds to the value.
With vintage oriental carpets, this may mean different designs from what a weaver or an area that might normally produce. It was often a commissioned weave for a family of high standing.
At Sharafi & Co, our intimate knowledge of the world of carpets and collectors, allows us to spot what will be the best investments.
We source goods wherever we can because we are looking for the best pieces at the best prices but first we look at the quality and the rarity. Then restoration or cleaning is done straight away so the piece is at its optimum and ready to put in your property.
