This is the most asked question in different forms about Handmade Persian Rugs. A combination of factors determines the valuation of a Handmade Rug. We have tried to simplify the reply to this question by creating a table we have named the 3c table. Every rug on our site has this table with three distinct headings. Each heading is composed of three subheadings. Each subheading has a number out of 20 to reflect the measure of that subheading.
Composition
The first subheading here is Wool. The quality of wool used in weaving an Oriental Carpet is crucial. Obviously, good quality handspun wool lasts longer and ages better in the long run. The longer the yarn, the better the wool.
The second subheading here is Weave. The quality of the weave is important. This is not just how densely it is woven but also how evenly or expertly it is woven. A very fine Persian Rug can have a knot count of well over a million per square meter.
Dye is the third subheading and is very important in the rug’s appearance. An excellent natural dye will mature with age and appear better with more depth. A low-quality dye will look dull and probably be more susceptible to colour run.
Calibre
The first subheading is Rarity. The rarity of a Turkish carpet or Persian carpet greatly impacts its value.
The next subheading is antique value. Some rugs have attributes that make them more likely to have a better or higher value as antiques.
Design is the third subheading here. This is also affected by fashion. For instance, if minimalism is in fashion, then the less busy designs do well. However, here, our measure is how well-executed and good the design is. The rarity of the design is also considered.
Condition
The first subheading is Restoration. The extent of restoration on a Persian Carpet can also negatively affect its price.
Wear reflects the degree of wear in a handmade rug. Anything under 10, you are entering the shabby chic realm.
Tinting is probably the most important subheading, as it can significantly affect the value. Tinting is colouring in any wear or discolouration. While some tinting in old rugs can be negligible, anything under 15 will start affecting the rug’s value.
