Kilims
What is a kilim?
A kilim is a pileless, flat-woven rug made by interweaving coloured wefts and warps, creating crisp, graphic designs. Unlike knotted (pile) carpets, kilims are thin, flexible and often reversible, making them versatile for floors, walls and layering.
Why choose a kilim?
- Lightweight & low profile — great under doors and for layering.
- Reversible use — many pieces can be flipped for longer life.
- Bold pattern & colour — geometric motifs and clear outlines from the flatweave structure.
- Durable wool fibres — resilient, easy to maintain and long-lasting with simple care.

How to pick the right size kilim
- Hallway & entry: runners (approx. 60–90 cm × 200–350 cm).
- Living room: leave ~20–30 cm border; front sofa legs on the rug.
- Dining: add ~60 cm beyond the table so chairs stay on the rug.
(Use these as quick guides; check each product’s exact measurements.)
Care & maintenance
- Vacuum lightly (no beater bar on fringes); rotate every 6–12 months.
- Avoid machine washing; damp for long periods can harm fibres.
- Professional wash recommended when heavily soiled; spot-clean gently.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. The flatweave structure and durable wool make kilims a practical choice. Use an underlay to minimise movement and wear.
Kilims are flat-woven (no pile); designs are formed by interwoven wefts/warps. Pile rugs are knotted, creating a thicker surface.
Many are. The pattern often appears on both sides due to the flatweave.
Vacuum gently and avoid rotary brushes; do not machine wash. For spills, blot and air-dry; for deep cleaning, use a professional rug cleaner.
