Lovely Vintage Turkman Bag From Northeast of Iran
£290.00
This lovely vintage Turkman Tobreh bag, woven in Northeast Iran, is a fine example of traditional tribal textile art. Tobrehs—nomadic storage or grain bags—were both utilitarian and expressive, often reflecting the identity of their maker through symbolic patterns and colour choices.
This particular piece is noted for its stylish and balanced colour palette. The front features repeating S-shaped motifs, a common protective symbol in Turkman weaving, framed by soft blue-grey bands that lend the design structure and subtle elegance. The reverse side is kept plain in natural cream, adding a minimalist charm and highlighting the craftsmanship.
Importantly, the original locking tabs are intact, a rare find in bags of this age and type. The soft handspun wool and natural plant-based dyes contribute to the bag’s warm character. It remains in excellent vintage condition, with only a couple of small discoloured areas on the back, as shown in the photos—minor signs of its age and authentic use.
Whether displayed as a decorative accent, wall hanging, or incorporated into a collector’s textile archive, this piece tells a rich cultural story through its simplicity and strength.
