This striking antique Sanjabi saltbag, handwoven by the Kurdish Sanjabi tribe of West Iran, is a beautiful example of traditional nomadic craftsmanship. Saltbags (namakdan) like this one were used by pastoral communities to store and carry salt—an essential resource—but also served as canvases of cultural expression.

What sets this piece apart is the intact condition—a rarity for tribal textiles that were typically used and subjected to the elements. It features a vibrant lozenge motif on the front, symbolising protection and abundance, and a decoratively woven kilim backing that adds further visual interest.

Expertly made using a combination of kilim (flatweave) and piled weaving techniques, the saltbag is composed of high-quality handspun wool, coloured with natural vegetable dyes that have aged beautifully. The depth of the colours and sheen of the wool highlight the weaver’s technical skill and the quality of materials used.

Its decorative appeal, historical value, and excellent preservation make this saltbag a rare collector’s item, suitable for display as wall art, in a museum setting, or in a curated personal collection.

I have no hesitation in recommending Sharifi & Co. He is an expert on carpets and kilims and clearly loves and appreciates them. His company washed, repaired and moth proofed my beautiful Uzbek kilim within a very short time. Thank you very much Sharifi & Co.

It was a great pleasure doing business with Mr. Sharafi, he knows and loves rugs and that is reflected in the excellent work he has done restoring and repairing mine. They’re looking lovely (and I promise I’ll take good care of them!) Thank you.

Looking for someone who specialises in cleaning persian rugs is like walking a minefield. Thank goodness I found Sharafi. I knew I was on the right track when I heard the National Trust gets their antique rugs done there. Ok no more drinking red wine on valuable heirloom…
