We have not encountered any hand-knotted reproductions of Morris’ work that truly match the quality of ours. Through our dedication to studying knotting techniques and a profound attention to detail, we have crafted a production that honors one of the greatest designers of the Arts and Crafts movement. The high-quality wool and natural dyes used in this rug promise longevity and transform it into a cherished heirloom. The Hammersmith Carpet features an intricate design with a striking wide red border that frames the central field. This clear field artfully mimics the appearance of a tranquil pool of water, showcasing a mesmerizing interplay of colors that shift and ripple, evoking the natural beauty and fluidity of a serene landscape. William Morris, born in England in 1834, emerged as a leading figure in the British Arts and Crafts Movement. As an accomplished writer, textile designer, and social commentator, he founded a design firm alongside the artist Edward Burne-Jones and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti, profoundly influencing the decoration of churches and homes well into the 20th century. Morris revitalized traditional textile arts and production methods while helping establish the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings in the U.K. Though Morris held Persian carpets in the highest regard, he embraced the coarser Turkish (Ghiordes) knot for his hand-knotted carpets, woven at a density of 25 knots per square inch. His designs incorporate many motifs he created specifically for carpets, showcasing the later, more formal elements characteristic of Henry Dearle’s work
